EVANSVILLE, INDIANA – During an emotional news conference Monday, Evansville police identified the officer who was shot and gravely injured early Sunday as Sam Taylor.
EPD Chief Phil Smith said Taylor was shot at least twice while attempting to arrest a suspect in a reported car theft, leaving him with "very serious injuries." He's currently in stable condition at an area hospital, but could face a grim prognosis.
"In his dedication to put our community before himself, he may have lost the use of his lower extremities," Smith said, his voice breaking.
The person charged with shooting Taylor is an 18-year-old who now faces two counts of attempted murder.
Officials filed a warrant for the arrest of Jailani Darealis Chew in Vanderburgh Circuit Court on Sunday. According to the probable cause affidavit in the case, Chew shot Taylor and fired at several other officers after attempting to flee a stolen vehicle outside the Rally's on East Virginia Street just before 1:30 a.m. Sunday.
