MATTHEWS, NORTH CAROLINA - On Thursday, September 25, 2025, at approximately 4:37 P.M., Matthews officers assigned to the Patrol Division responded to the 1700 block of Chambers Drive regarding a report of a domestic disturbance. Upon their arrival, they made contact with a female standing outside who had visible physical injuries. She stated that her husband had assaulted her and had been holding her in their home against her will.

During this initial contact, officers discovered that her husband, identified as Mr. Tyrone Derrick Jenkins (DOB – 04/23/1981), was currently inside the residence with their four children and had two outstanding felony arrest warrants.

While officers were still outside speaking with his wife, Mr. Jenkins briefly came outside but then quickly returned to the residence and locked the door with their children still inside. Officers on scene immediately requested additional officers to respond, who quickly established a perimeter around the residence to monitor activity inside the home. The Matthews Police Department Special Response Team (SRT) was activated while officers on scene attempted to make contact with Mr. Jenkins.

After making contact with Mr. Jenkins by phone, a member of the Matthews Police Department Negotiation Team was eventually able to convince him to allow his four children to safely exit the residence so that officers could reunite them with their mother. Extensive negotiations with Mr. Jenkins continued in an attempt to get him to peacefully exit the residence and surrender, but they were ultimately unsuccessful.

Due to the totality of the circumstances, members of the SRT were beginning to enter the residence to take Mr. Jenkins into custody, during which time Mr. Jenkins came outside but continued to refuse to comply with the officers’ commands. Due to Mr. Jenkins' continued non-compliance, officers then deployed a non-lethal disorientation device better known as a “Flashbang,” in which Mr. Jenkins immediately surrendered and was safely taken into custody. No injuries were reported during Mr. Jenkins’ apprehension.

Mr. Jenkins was transported to the Mecklenburg County Jail and charged with the following:
(4) False Imprisonment;
(4) Misdemeanor Child Abuse;
Misdemeanor Domestic Violence,
Resisting a Public Officer.
