Man dies after late-night shooting on Philips Highway

Jacksonville, Florida - JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A man is dead after a shooting Saturday night on Jacksonville’s Southside, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. Officers were called around 9:30 p.m. to the 8200 block of Philips Highway for a report of someone shot. “Initially, it’s like, is it still ongoing? Is something still happening? Is the person who committed a crime still around?” Carrie Ray recounted how she first came across the scene on Sunday morning. “You know, [it’s] just very alarming.” When they got there, they didn’t find anyone at the scene. A short time later, an adult man walked into a local hospital with gunshot wounds. He died shortly after arriving. Ray goes to the gym right next to where the shooting happened, and said Sunday’s violent crime isn’t common in the area. “It’s very unsure of where it’s safe to go at what times now because you’re not sure, you know, what could happen anywhere at any moment,” Ray said. JSO’s Homicide and Crime Scene units are now investigating. The case is still being classified, and detectives are working with the Medical Examiner’s Office and the State Attorney’s Office.
