UK - A migrant who tried to kiss a schoolgirl before groping a woman who came to her aid was jailed for 12 months today.
Ethiopian national Hadush Kebatu, 41, acted 'ignorantly and repulsively' when he sexually assaulted the schoolgirl and another woman just days after arriving in the country on a small boat, Chelmsford Magistrates' Court heard today.
Kebatu became aroused as he put his hand on the girl's thighs and stroked her hair despite knowing 'full well she was only 14'.
The defendant, who was a 'teacher of sports' in his home country, then tried to kiss a woman who attempted to intervene, before putting his hand on her leg and telling her she was pretty.
District Judge Christopher Williams said his 'disgusting and sickening' behaviour, which sparked a huge anti-migrant demonstration in Epping, Essex, highlighted the 'poor regard you must have for women'.
While accepting the defendant couldn't have anticipated his actions 'would cause such a response from the public', he went on to criticise him for portraying himself as a 'victim' and a 'scapegoat' during an interview with a probation officer.
Kebatu was also 'manipulative' in the same interview and was 'reluctant to speak about the offending', claiming he could not remember what had happened while also blaming his poor English and mental health issues.
Judge Williams said there 'remains little know' about Kebatu as he 'refused to engage and open up' to the probation officer, adding 'I had anticipated that there would be evidence of some traumatic life experiences'.
Prosecutor Stuart Cowen told the court the defendant had claimed he 'didn't know how strict the UK was'.
