JEFFERSON COUNTY, ALABAMA — A grand jury has indicted Daveon Ferlando Dortch in connection with the death of Phong Huynh Nguyen, who was shot and killed on March 3, 2024, in the 900 Block of Dugan Avenue.
Dortch and another suspect, Cameron Scales, are charged in connection with the murder. Dortch is charged with capital murder.
According to police, officers responded to a call of a person shot in the 900 block of Dugan Avenue just off Highway 78 in northwest Birmingham. Officers found the victim lying unresponsive inside a residence that is used as a short-term rental property. The victim was identified as 21-year-old Phong Nguyen. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police believe there was a party or some kind of gathering at the house when someone fired gunshots.
