MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE - A convicted murderer was released from custody after being convicted by a jury. His attorney told FOX13 that a clerical error allowed his client to walk out of 201 Poplar 38 minutes after being convicted of first-degree murder.

Shelby County Court records show that Anthony Green was convicted of first-degree murder after a trial on September 24, 2025. That murder charge stems from a shooting that happened in Whitehaven in June 2020. Octavious Atkins, 27, died at the scene of that shooting.

Memphis Police said Atkins was sitting in his car at the intersection of Shelby Drive and Neely Road when Green pulled up in a white Mercedes SUV and opened fire, killing Atkins and injuring a 49-year-old man in another car. Officers later found that white Mercedes on fire behind a building. Investigators identified Green as the suspect, and he was arrested by a Mississippi Highway Patrolman months later.

People convicted of first-degree murder in Tennessee are usually given a life sentence. But Shelby County Court records say that Green was released on September 24, 2025, the same day other court records show he was convicted.
