DENTON, TEXAS — Police arrested two people Sunday after a parking lot dispute turned deadly in North Texas, officials announced.
According to the Denton Police Department, officers got a call about a fight in the parking lot of the QuikTrip at 321 Eagle Drive just before 1 a.m. Denton PD said that while on the phone with dispatchers, the caller heard gunshots. When officers arrived, they found a man who had been shot, the department said. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
An early investigation determined that a man and woman, later identified as Alfred Jackson Jr., 26, of Pattinson, Miss., and Olivia Guster, 24, of Port Gibson, Miss., respectively, got into a fight with the victim and the victim's friend over a right-of-way issue. The altercation turned physical when Jackson allegedly hit the victim's friend with a shovel. Police said Guster also physically assaulted the victim and his friend.
According to police, Jackson eventually shot the victim, then pointed the gun at the friend before getting in the passenger seat and driving off with Guster. Denton PD said the victim and the friend did not know Jackson or Guster.
After learning about the incident from witnesses, officers later pulled over Guster and Jackson in the 1400 block of West University Drive. Police said Jackson ran from officers during the stop but was detained.
Officers arrested both Jackson and Guster, who were both booked into the City of Denton Jail and charged with murder, records show. Jackson faces two additional charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and evading arrest.
Denton PD said both will be transferred to Denton County Jail, where their bonds will be set. The department said it is continuing to investigate the shooting, and the victim's identity will be released by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office once the next of kin has been notified.
