JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI - A man was found guilty of shooting and burning his cousin to death.
According to Hinds County District Attorney Jody Owens, 59-year-old Carleton Haynes was found guilty of first-degree murder and arson in the death of his cousin, 58-year-old Melvin McNair.
On June 14, 2023, the Jackson Police Department responded to a home on West County Line Road regarding reports of a house fire.
That is when JPD officers discovered McNair lying in the doorway of the back of the home with a gunshot wound to the face, and the lower part of his body was burned.
Further investigation revealed that the victim was shot with a sawed-off shotgun, that Haynes had been staying with McNair, and that the victim was shot during a verbal and physical altercation.
