LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY - A Louisville woman is facing several charges after she was involved in a rollover crash with a young child in the vehicle in the Limerick neighborhood late Wednesday night.
Just before 10:30 p.m., a Louisville Metro Police officer responded to reports of a crash with injuries in the 900 block of S. 7th Street, according to court documents.
Callers stated that a black SUV had crashed into two vehicles before overturning on its side. Callers also said someone was still inside the SUV, including a young child, but everyone was out of the vehicle when police arrived.
The officer found the SUV flipped over, resting on the driver's side, and the driver — 30-year-old Chalisa Helm — sitting in a chair, covered in blood, in the middle of the street near the vehicle, according to court documents. Helm's speech seemed slurred as she called out "we're good" to the officer.
She told police she couldn't remember what happened before the crash and had to catch a flight at 6:15 the next morning. The officer then noticed an open can of Bud Light in the center cup holder inside the vehicle. Upon further questioning, Helm said she reached down to send a text on her phone when she crashed into the parked vehicles.
Helm refused to submit to a sobriety test or medical treatment, but the officer noticed glossy eyes and the smell of alcohol on her breath, and police said she admitted to drinking before the crash, according to the arrest report.
Police said Helm "created a substantial danger of serious physical injury or possibly death to her child."
The child was taken to Norton Children's Hospital to be evaluated.
Helm was placed under arrest and taken to UofL Health Hospital before she was booked into Louisville Metro Corrections. A chemical breath test indicated her blood alcohol content was .084 five hours after the crash.
Helm is facing several charges, including endangering the welfare of a minor, operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol, wanton endangerment and reckless driving.
In addition to those charges, Helm is facing charges in a separate incident on Aug. 20. According to court documents, Helm "unlawfully and intentionally" damaged a man's vehicle "when she attempted to run him off the road." Police said Helm followed the victim to Frankfort Avenue near Pope Street, where she got out of the vehicle and "threw a Stanley cup through the rear windshield of the victim's vehicle," causing it to shatter. Police said Helm also used an "unknown object" to scratch the victim's front and back passenger door.
The victim wrote down the vehicle's plate number and called police. The damage to the victim's vehicle is estimated at $3,000.
