WEBB COUNTY, TEXAS - The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) arrested an illegal immigrant who was also a convicted murderer from Mexico during a traffic stop in Webb County.

On September 25, shortly after 9 a.m., agents with the DPS Criminal Investigations Division (CID) and DPS Troopers conducted a traffic stop on a black Chevrolet Malibu at the intersection of San Luis and Monterrey Streets in Laredo. During the stop, they discovered that the driver, 51-year-old Gregorio Denova-Cantu, was an illegal immigrant from Mexico.

An investigation revealed that Cantu was an aggravated deported felon who had re-entered the U.S. after serving time for murder. He is also a confirmed ranking member of the Hermandad de Pistoleros Latinos gang.

Cantu was convicted in 2004 for murder and engaging in organized crime, serving 18 years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) in Huntsville, Texas.

After completing his sentence, he was deported from the United States by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) in 2023.
