At 8:30 p.m., officers heard the sound of gunshots in the area of the 400 block of Umatilla St. SE. A 17-year-old boy was found and life-saving measures were attempted, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. "I'm extremely sad. It's depressing that we are investigating a murder that happened literally the exact same place as a 16-year-old was killed a little over a year ago," GRPD Chief Eric Winstrom said. "We've got to get better as a city," Winstrom continued. "There is no explanation that's going to make the people that knew this young man or everybody in this community feel that there was some justification in this, or that it makes sense it's just young people out here firing dozens, if not hundreds of shots and now we have a young boy whose life was ended at 17 years old." The shooting is being investigated by GRPD's Major Case Team. Anyone with information is asked to contact GRPD detectives at (616) 456-3380 or Silent Observer at (616) 774-2345.
