UK - Ian Watkins, the disgraced white frontman of the Welsh rock band Lostprophets, was murdered at HMP Wakefield, a high-security prison in West Yorkshire, where he was serving a 29-year sentence for multiple child sex offences, including the attempted rape of a baby.

On the morning of Saturday, October 11, Watkins was reportedly attacked by fellow inmates after prisoners were let out of their cells. His throat was allegedly cut, and he was pronounced dead shortly after emergency services arrived.

Two men have been charged with his murder: Rico Gedel (formerly Rashid Gedel), a 25-year-old Black inmate, and Samuel Dodsworth, a 43-year-old white inmate. Both were housed at HMP Wakefield at the time of the incident.

At Leeds Crown Court, Gedel refused to appear via video link, reportedly because he wanted to attend in person. Dodsworth appeared remotely from a segregation unit, wearing a grey t-shirt and remaining expressionless throughout the brief five-minute hearing. Neither suspect entered a plea.

The judge scheduled a plea and trial preparation hearing for November 12, with a provisional trial date set for May 5, 2026. Both men were remanded in custody, and no bail application was made.

Watkins had reportedly been living on a general wing rather than one designated for sex offenders. Sources suggest he may have paid other inmates for protection, but tensions remained high. One insider commented, “It was as if he knew his time was up.”

West Yorkshire Police confirmed that Watkins died after being “seriously assaulted.” The force stated: “Detectives have charged two men with murder after the death of a prisoner at HMP Wakefield on Saturday.”

Watkins was convicted in 2013 of 13 offences, including the attempted rape of an 11-month-old baby and sexual activity with a child. His crimes shocked the public and led to widespread condemnation.
