Jacarie dead after Columbus Georgia park shooting

COLUMBUS, GEORGIA - One person is dead after a shooting Friday afternoon at Shirley B. Winston Park, according to a post on the Columbus Police Department’s X page.
CPD public information officer Brittany Santiago said the call came in at 2:28 p.m. She said the victim is a male. The Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office had vehicles blocking the entrance into the park at the corner of Steam Mill Road and Northstar Drive.
A Muscogee County Coroner’s Office van was seen leaving the scene at around 5:30 p.m. On Saturday, Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan identified the victim as Jacarie Charles, 22. He was pronounced dead at 3:14 p.m.
Santiago said CPD does not believe the shooting at the park and a shooting on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard also Friday afternoon are connected.
In the fatal shooting on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, the victim was identified as Victor Hinton, 17. Bryan said Hinton suffered a gunshot wound to the head, and the circumstances of the shooting were still being investigated.
Shirley B. Winston Park closed for the week Columbus Councilor Toyia Tucker of District 4 said in a Facebook post Friday that the park would be closed for the rest of the week. Tucker confirmed the closure was due to the shooting. “It’s with a heavy heart that we continue to have situations like these occurring in our recreation facilities,” Tucker said in a comment on the Facebook post. “The city is taking all precautions to ensure the safety of our staff and patrons.”
