ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO - Albuquerque Police Department detectives arrested Keith Thompson for murdering a man overnight outside a Southeast Albuquerque nightclub. Police are withholding the victim’s name until his family is notified.

Police allege that 56-year-old Thompson fatally shot the man during an argument in the parking lot at 525 San Pedro Dr. S.E. APD’s PIO Gilbert Gallegos initially reported that this shooting death happened at San Pedro Dr. and Marquette Ave. NE, which is a mile north of the actual homicide location.

The victim’s girlfriend said the two men, who have known each other for many years, got into an argument after they saw Thompson at the Elk’s Lodge sometime after 1 AM. She said Thompson walked out of the business and accused her boyfriend of disrespecting him. A bystander stepped in to de-escalate the situation, and Thompson appeared to drive away.

Shortly after that, Thompson drove back to the entrance of the Elk’s Lodge, where the victim was standing. The victim’s girlfriend said she saw her boyfriend next to the passenger side of Thompson’s vehicle as the two exchanged words. She then heard two gunshots and saw Thompson’s vehicle flee through the parking lot.

Authorities say the gunfire struck the victim in the chest and shoulder, killing him at the scene.

APD detectives tracked Thompson’s silver 2009 Chrysler 300, noted for its distinctive silver/chrome rims and grille, to a residence on Valencia Dr. SE. Investigators also used automated license plate readers to spot the vehicle at an intersection just minutes after the shooting.

Detectives secured an arrest warrant for Thompson and arrested him this afternoon at the residence. We were aware of police activity on Valencia near Anderson around 11:30 AM.

Thompson is charged with an open count of murder and shooting at or from a motor vehicle. He will be booked into the Metro Detention Center.
