MACOMB COUTY, MICHIGAN - A Macomb County caregiver, Linda Polk, 52, is facing trial for first-degree murder and other charges after allegedly telling hospital staff to remove life support from a 78-year-old man in her care, who died in October 2024. She is also charged with embezzlement, identity theft, and fraud. Authorities said Polk became the caregiver for the victim’s wife in 2021 and later obtained Power of Attorney over him, according to Audacy.
ClickOnDetroit reported that Polk did not notify the victim’s family about his death and instead had him cremated. She is also accused of creating a fraudulent quit-claim deed for the victim’s home, embezzling money, and using the victim’s credit cards. The Macomb County Sheriff's Office said in a statement obtained by MacombGov that Linda Polk faces two counts each of forgery of documents affecting real property and identity theft, along with one count each of embezzlement and illegal use of financial transaction devices.
Macomb County Prosecutor Pete Lucido described the charges against Polk as “These are despicable and surreptitious actions allegedly done by this caregiver to one of our vulnerable adult citizens and the family,” and stated, “This office will zealously pursue justice to to the fullest extent of the law to protect our vulnerable adults and their families from such an atrocity,” as mentioned by Audacy. Following a preliminary examination, Judge Carrie Fuca ruled there was enough evidence to move forward with a trial. Polk remains in custody, with her next court appearance scheduled for September 22.
