LAWRENCE COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI — A Lawrence County man will spend the rest of his life in prison for the killing of a Vicksburg native earlier this summer.

Charles Sims, 57, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in the death of La’Datra Williams, a mother of four. Judge Brad Touchstone accepted the plea on Aug. 25 and sentenced Sims to life in prison.

Williams’ body was discovered in July in a shallow grave in Lawrence County after Sims, during hours of questioning, agreed to lead investigators to the site. Authorities said Williams had been missing for several months before her remains were found.

Sims has been the subject of speculation in the community, with rumors of his involvement in a cult and claims that he fathered more than 20 children.

In addition to his prison sentence, Sims was ordered to pay a $10,000 court fine, $500 to the District Attorney Investigative Fund, $500 to the Public Defender’s Reimbursement Fund and $500 to the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office Investigative Fee.
