OPELIKA, ALABAMA — A 23-year-old Opelika man is behind bars, accused of robbing two Beauregard businesses at gunpoint.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office says deputies were called to Mike’s Grocery on Lee Road 166 around 9:13 p.m. Thursday, September 4, after a store clerk reported being held at gunpoint.

According to investigators, a man wearing dark clothing and sunglasses grabbed a Sprite, walked to the counter, then pulled what appeared to be a handgun inside a bag from his waistband. The suspect demanded cash, threatening to shoot if the clerk did not comply. He left the store in a gray SUV.

Detectives identified the suspect as Cortaveus Markeyon Eiland, 23, of Opelika. He was arrested at his home on Lee Road 400 and charged with Robbery 1st Degree.

Investigators say evidence also tied Eiland to an earlier robbery on August 18 at the Dollar General on Alabama Highway 51 in Beauregard. In that case, the suspect—again dressed in dark clothing and sunglasses—pointed what looked like a handgun in a bag at the clerk before fleeing with cash in a gray SUV.

Eiland is being held without bail at the Lee County Detention Center pending an Aniah’s Law hearing.
