CALIFORNIA - A transgender athlete at a California high school allegedly laughed in the faces of three female opponents after injuring them during a volleyball game, a lawsuit from the player's former teammates claims.
Three volleyball players from Jurupa Valley High School in Southern California sued the California Department of Education, the California Interscholastic Federation and the Jurupa Unified School District for violating the federal Title IX law, which protects against sex-based discrimination in schools.
The lawsuit filed last week claimed that the high school failed to protect their female athletes after the trans student, identified by CNN as AB Hernandez, joined the volleyball and track teams as a female athlete.
'Defendants have knowingly permitted a male student to compete on the JVHS varsity girls' track and field and volleyball teams, access female locker rooms and bathrooms, and engage in harassing conduct toward female athletes,' the lawsuit stated.
The three girls - Madison McPherson, Alyssa McPherson and Hadeel Hazameh - claimed that Hernandez's presence on the school's female sports teams and inside of locker rooms and bathrooms served as an infringement on their religious freedoms.
In the suit, Hernandez is accused of having laughed at injuring three opponents during a volleyball game, with 'the strength to hit balls at a force greater than most female athletes.'
It was further alleged that Hernandez 'lacks the skill to consistently control' hits.
On 'multiple occasions' the athlete is accused of having struck opponents in the head with the ball, including instances in September when Hernandez was alleged to have boasted about causing three female players to suffer possible concussions.
In response, Coach Fernando Centeno restricted Hernandez to hitting from the back row but she ignored these instructions and 'attacked from the front row with force far exceeding female standards of play,' the suit alleged.
