POCAHONTAS, MISSISSIPPI — A man wanted in a Yazoo City shooting that killed the mother of his children died by suicide just before he was about to be captured.
A manhunt for Erwin Barnes, 39, ended near a rest stop on Highway 49 in Pocahontas, hours after the Sept. 23 shooting that took the life of 35-year-old Kenlanda Burns. Yazoo County Sheriff Jeremy McCoy said Barnes was in the process of surrendering when he shot himself.

The investigation began at about 6:30 a.m. Tuesday at Willow Wood Apartments on Grady Avenue, where Burns, a mother of three, was found shot to death, according to Yazoo City Chief Terry Gann.
Family members said Burns and Barnes had been in a relationship that ended about a year ago, but according to Burns' sister, Barnes continued to come around. A relative said Barnes had pistol-whipped Burns a few weeks ago.
