COVINGTON, TENNESSEE - A Mid-South mom is behind bars on a $50,000 bond after police say she neglected and abused her two-year-old at a grocery store.
The Covington Police Department says the incident was captured on surveillance video.
Lashona Johnson, 25, of Dyersburg, is now charged with child abuse and neglect.
Officers responded to the store to review the security video and speak with employees.
The manager confirmed that an incident involving a mother and her two-year-old son had happened the evening before, on October 1.
The manager told police that a little boy was left at the service desk of the store, so employees put out a broadcast over the store’s intercom that a toddler was alone.
About ten minutes later, the boy’s mother approached the desk and said to her son, “You know I’m going to beat your a**, right?”
Police say she then pulled the two-year-old from the desk “in an aggressive manner,” dragged him to the middle of the checkout line, and “repeatedly struck the child on his back.”
Between the video evidence and witness statements, police were able to identify Johnson as the suspect. Police say Johnson admitted she was the woman in the video.
