GALVESTON, TEXAS - A Galveston man is behind bars after police say he stabbed a minor several times at an apartment complex.

Official say the incident occurred on Wednesday night along an apartment complex in the 3100 block of Cove View Boulevard.

"I saw cops with flashlights looking underneath cars, so obviously they were in pursuit of someone."

One woman who didn't want her identity shown tells ABC13 she lives in the building next to where Galveston police say it happened.

"I saw cops with flashlights looking underneath cars, so obviously they were in pursuit of someone."

"It's horrific. Of course, a young person should never be experiencing a stabbing," she said.

Galveston police say the person responsible is Thomas Gilchrist.

According to court documents, the victim was "having an episode on this night and was extremely angry" and that's when Gilchrist told detectives he tried avoiding the juvenile by getting inside of a car but he claims the minor still managed to hit him. One neighbor remembers hearing noises from her apartment

"I heard a little bit of the yelling that night. I wasn't sure what it was," Amy Sears, who also lives at the apartment complex, said.

Court documents state that Gilchrist told detectives he then went back to the apartment and locked himself in. That's when he claims the victim followed him and punched him as he opened the door, prompting Gilchrist to pull out a knife and stab the minor multiple times.

The documents go on to state a person interviewed by detectives told them she "does not believe Thomas Gilchrist acted out of self-defense and stated that she knew he was intoxicated."

Galveston police say the juvenile was sent to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and haven't said what the relationship between the two is.

For neighbors, the incident has left them shaken up.

"Especially being a woman living on her own who lives in a really safe community, for something like this to happen. It's really shocking," Sears said.

Gilchrist has been charged with aggravated assault and a bond of $150,000 has been recommended.
