Jury trial for Bowling Green murder to begin after Quinton killed Darrius in 2023 at a Kentucky trailer park
BOWLING GREEN, KENTUCKY - A jury trial for a man accused of murder will begin Wednesday in Warren Circuit Court. Quinton Hampton, 39, of Auburn, faces charges of murder, tampering with physical evidence and convicted felon in possession of a handgun.
Hampton is accused of fatally shooting Darrius Wickware, 30, of Bowling Green, on Dec. 30, 2023, outside a residence at Brookwood Mobile Home Park on Morgantown Road.
A pretrial conference held Aug. 28 before Warren Circuit Judge J.B. Hines saw Warren County Commonwealth’s Attorney Kori Beck Bumgarner and Hampton’s attorney, David Graf of the Department of Public Advocacy, confirm that the case would go to trial. Hampton declined an offer to resolve the case with a guilty plea in exchange for a 25-year prison sentence, Bumgarner said in court.
Hines granted a motion from Bumgarner directing Graf to provide her office with any reciprocal discovery evidence he has gathered while the case has been pending.
Wickware’s death was investigated by the Bowling Green Police Department, which was called out to the trailer park in the early morning hours of Dec. 30, 2023, on a shots fired complaint. City police interviewed multiple witnesses who reported seeing Hampton and Wickware in a physical altercation with one another. Witnesses described Hampton open his jacket during the confrontation, and then two gunshots were fired as Wickware ran into a residence at Brookwood, according to court records.
Wickware was taken in a private vehicle to TriStar Greenview Regional Medical Center in the aftermath of the shooting, and he was pronounced dead there. Investigators viewed video surveillance footage from the area near the site of the shooting enabling them to identify Hampton’s vehicle and locate it outside his home in Auburn.
An arrest warrant for Hampton was obtained Dec. 30, 2023, and police arrested him on Jan. 1, 2024, after confirming that he was at a residence on Memphis Junction Road. According to a search warrant, Wickware’s girlfriend told BGPD on Dec. 31, 2023, that Hampton had contacted her late that afternoon “hoping to tell her his side of the story and he requested a call back on the same number.”
