CONNECTICUT - State Republicans aimed new criticism at Connecticut laws protecting immigrants who lack permanent legal status after New Haven police arrested a twice-deported man in the violent rape of a jogger.
In a joint statement, nine GOP lawmakers in the state Senate said that the case was "Exihibit A" that Connecticut "is a super-sanctuary state." They called for the man charged in the sexual assault, Ludvi Carias-Interiano, to be deported, claiming taxpayers "should not pay for him to stay in our jail."
Carias-Interiano, who is from Guatemala, was initially held on $750,000 bond after his arrest Sept. 11 on charges of aggravated sexual assault and first-degree unlawful restraint. He was presented in court the following day, where a Connecticut state judge upped his bond to $1 million. He had previously been deported twice, officials said in court.
