ROANOKE RAPIDS, NORTH CAROLINA - A Roanoke Rapids man has been charged with two counts of murder in connection with a double shooting Wednesday afternoon at the New Dixie gas station.

According to an earlier press release from Chief Lawrence Wiggins with the Roanoke Rapids Police Department, at about 1 p.m. on Aug. 27, RRPD responded to the establishment at 142 Julian R. Allsbrook Highway in reference to a shooting. Upon arrival, Dasean L. Banks of Roanoke Rapids was found deceased outside of the building, and a second victim, Anthony Shearin, was found inside the store with multiple gunshot wounds and in critical condition.

Shearin was taken by EMS to ECU Health North Hospital and transported to a medical facility in Greenville for treatment, but later succumbed to his injuries.

According to the press release, a third individual, Ju-Quan Letrae Rawles of Roanoke Rapids, was charged with obstruction of justice following the incident. RRPD later charged Rawles with the murders of Banks and Shearin on Aug. 29.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Rawles shot Shearin following a physical altercation with Banks. In the process of shooting, Rawles shot and killed Banks. Police said Shearin and Banks had a previous altercation the night before.

Banks, accompanied by Rawles, confronted Shearin at the New Dixie, which an altercation ensued, leading to the shooting. Shearin was in possession of a firearm at the time of the shooting, which law enforcement confirmed was stolen.

The press release reads that the case remains under investigation by RRPD.

“Due to the complexity of the situation, no additional details are being released,” Chief Wiggins said in the press release. “The RRPD is thoroughly investigating this case and working to ensure all facts are established and supported by evidence before any additional actions are taken. The RRPD would like to thank the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office for responding and providing additional support to this investigation.”
