OXFORD, MISSISSIPPI - A large event following Ole Miss' first football game of the season ended in gunfire at a barbeque restaurant on South Lamar Boulevard in Oxford.

Antwan Terrell Tompkins, 19, was charged with aggravated assaulted following the event.

Cell phone video obtained by FOX13 shows over a hundred people at Booth’s BBQ and Yard around 12:30 Sunday morning. Oxford Police (OPD) said the crowd gathered after the Ole Miss football game, but the celebration turned violent.

Police said the crowd caused parking and traffic problems on South Lamar. An Uber driver who asked to remain anonymous told FOX13 those conditions made the roads dangerous for drivers and riders.

"I mean, I've seen large crowds of people and that was absolutely insane, especially when there is a large group of people,” said the driver.

At around 12:45 a.m., police said Tompkins fired a gun. Officers rushed in and took him into custody. Police also arrested 20-year-old Dezreke Douglass and charged him with carrying a concealed weapon.

“Literally right behind my car, multiple gunshots rang out. My heart literally hit my stomach. I was on the phone with a rider the whole time and all you can hear is screaming,” said the driver.

Investigators said about 20 officers worked until 3 a.m. that day to clear the area, making 42 traffic stops and seizing 10 guns.

FOX13 found a flyer advertising a back-to-school party at Booth's that same night. Police said three event organizers were cited for noise and inadequate security.

The owner of Booth's, 42-year-old Josh Booth, was also cited for lack of security and awareness, no age verification system, and no safety plan.

FOX13 spoke with students who said they were shocked about the gun violence following the game.

"I wouldn’t say gun violence is a problem here. I think some bad things can happen anywhere," said Hayden Bradley, a sophomore.

"There is usually police presence all over the square and for that to happen in Oxford in such a big environment and open environment, that’s insane that was allowed especially here," said Swayze Dornbusch, a freshman.

"We lived here our entire lives and that has never been the case. I never felt unsafe here, but with the more people that come here it's becoming more dangerous and rowdier," said Palmer Daugherty, a junior.

No injuries were reported.

FOX13 reached out to the owner of Booths BBQ and Yard but did not hear back Wednesday.
