MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE - A Memphis mother accused of sex crimes against children is now in custody.

Christiana Brown was indicted for rape of a child in March. FOX13 first encountered her in June after suspects in the death of her teenage son were arrested.

18-year-old Christian Brown was one of two teens shot and killed outside of Booker T. Washington High School in April.

Brown told FOX13 in June, "I had just talked to my son an hour and a half before they took his life. I FaceTimed him to let him know that I picked up his glasses.”

What FOX13 didn't know at the time was that the warrant was already issued for her arrest. The indictment alleges Brown sexually assaulted a child between the ages of 3 and 13 for months between 2015 and 2016.

FOX13 spoke to a man who said it was not only one child. He said his loved one is another victim of Brown's, although she is not part of the current indictment.

"I was surprised, but not really surprised," he told FOX13.

With this indictment coming about a decade after the crime, FOX13 asked an attorney how the statute of limitations law changed in Tennessee.

"The laws changed drastically over the past decade or two. Prior to 1997, I believe it was a short statute of limitations, four years or upon the child's 18th birthday, whichever one is later. And then crimes that occurred after 2006, there's a 25-year statute of limitation after the child turns 18," said defense attorney Brandon Hall, who is not associated with the case.

He said these changes were made by the state legislature to allow for more people to be able to come forward. "Sometimes, these children might grow up, turn 18, 19, 20 years old and realize they've been abused and now they have the strength to be able to report it," he said.

Brown is due back in court on August 18.
