CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA - GoFundMe has removed controversial fundraisers for the man accused of killing a Ukrainian refugee on a North Carolina train after the legal defense efforts drew widespread criticism.
The pages portrayed Decarlos Brown Jr., a career criminal with at least 14 arrests, as equally a victim as Iryna Zarutska, the woman tragically stabbed multiple times in an unprovoked attack.
One fundraiser argued that supporting the 35-year-old homeless suspect would contribute to the “fight against racism and bias.” The campaign aimed to raise $35,000 but only collected $5.
Another page suggested that while the Blue Line incident was a tragedy, Decarlos Brown Jr. was let down by North Carolina's judicial system and mental health services, making him not entirely responsible for the events.
