NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT — Police have charged a New Haven man with murder in a shooting last month in the city's Dixwell neighborhood that left two people dead, his lawyer said.
Sergio Thomas, 39, was arrested in Waterbury Friday, attorney Darnell Crosland said Monday. Crosland confirmed his client was charged with murder and was due to appear at state Superior Court in New Haven Monday for arraignment.
Further details on the case, including the evidence police and prosecutors brought against Thomas to support a murder charge, were not immediately available.
The shooting played out on Dickerman Street on the afternoon of Monday, Aug. 25, according to New Haven police.
Police were called to the 70 block of the street for a report of two men who had been shot, the department said in a news release. Officers arrived to find the two victims unresponsive with multiple gunshot wounds.
The two men were taken by ambulance to Yale New Haven Hospital. One of them, 26-year-old Daiquan Hyman of East Haven, was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.
The second victim, 32-year-old New Haven resident Ernest Williams, died from his injuries later that evening, police said.
New Haven police said the initial investigation determined that an argument had broken out between a group of men, which escalated to a fight "prior to the shooting."
